In a series of videos titled ‘crisps, but better’, Instagram creator Priya Bowry takes the humble bag of crisps and transforms it into an explosion of flavour by adding in the basic ingredients of the popular Indian street food chaat – direct to the bag.
Chaat is known for its moreish mix of bold, tangy and savoury flavours. It traditionally consists of a variety of ingredients such as crispy fried dough (like puris or papdi), boiled potatoes, chickpeas, yogurt, tamarind chutney, mint chutney and various spices. It’s a seductive combination of sweet, sour, spicy and crunchy elements that come together to create a delicious and satisfying snack that will keep you coming back for more.
There are many different types of chaat, with regional variations, including:
Pani Puri (Gol Gappa) – Hollow puris filled with spicy, tangy water, potatoes and chickpeas.
Bhel Puri – A puffed rice dish mixed with sev (crispy noodles), potatoes and chutneys.
Aloo Tikki Chaat – Fried potato patties served with chutneys, yogurt and spices.
Dahi Puri – Small puris topped with yogurt and chutneys.
Chaat is a favourite for its burst of flavours and addictive crunchiness and commonly enjoyed as a snack or appetiser in India and parts of South Asia.
